How to Make a Good Decision
Making a decision can be hard sometimes. It can keep you frozen
in place. It can hold up projects and lose you money. It can
make even your stomach hurt. All because you can't make up your
mind. So how do you make a good decision?
Cara Lumen, Your Idea Optimizer, creator of the Magnetic Content
Development System says, "A good decision making process
will consistently help you make choices that produce the best
results. Having a conscious system for making decisions is very
freeing. Once you establish your individualized technique and
learn to trust it you will be unstoppable!"
The major reason we get stuck is because we find ourselves faced
with too many choices. We find we have too many ideas, or there
are too many "what if's" to consider. While helping
her coaching clients reach decisions about everything from where
they want their business to go, to the headline to choose for
their next ebook, Ms. Lumen stresses two important points to
remember when trying to make the right decision.
Major Point #1: Remember that not making a decision is a decision
not to take action. Inaction is a decision. Not going is a decision.
Not completing a project is a decision. Take the "no's"
out of your life.
Major Point #2: Decision making is the process of identifying
and choosing alternatives based on the values and preferences
of the decision maker.
That's you. The creator of whatever it is you are doing next.
Lumen says to "do the inner work that helps you know exactly
what you want to achieve. Know why you are doing it and who
you are doing it for. Know what you value. If you are making
an information product know who it is for, what needs it is
to meet and what form it will take. What is your Product Promise?
Knowing your objectives for making a particular choice gives
you the measuring stick by which to keep or discard any idea."
She gives this example: "If I make the decision to go to
Florida, I know I do not need to take my winter coat" Know
where you are going and pick the best route."
Lumen stated, "A decision is simply a matter of choosing
among alternatives. It is not about making a choice between
right and wrong. You choose right now, based on who you are
and what you know. Two years from now you will make a different
choice. But this is now. Follow your heart and your intuition
and simply choose."
Decide where you want to end up. When you identify your final
objective even that first choice eliminates much of the clutter
of choices around you. Pick your destination then chart the
best route.
Make your decisions on paper. Writing down
a list of ideas frees your mind from having to remember those
and makes room for more. Writing them down gives you the opportunity
to see them visually and rearrange them according to the criteria
you have set - what is needed first, what is not needed at all.
Stay focused on your core concepts. A creative, fertile mind
will see a myriad of ways to make a particular point. For instance,
if you are writing an information product 1) be certain you
are developing only one point at a time and 2) be certain how
you are expressing it will help your audience get it. Keeping
the core ideas you want to communicate in mind helps you continue
to make the right choices.
Keep the alternatives on a separate list. As you work you will
think of many other things that could be said, or written, or
developed. Simply put them on a separate list - your "Idea
List" if you wish. That way you know you have captured
them but do not have to stop to explore them and can stay focused
on the work you are doing.
Commit and follow through. Once you have made the decision and
have started what you are going to do, put the "what if's"
aside and do it with commitment.
Moving forward is all about making decisions -one after another.
And to make those decisions easily keep in mind where you want
to end up and simply keep making choices that will get you there.
"It's that simple." states Lumen,
"I help clients of all types- entrepreneurs to authors,
coaches to wellness workers effectively organize their ideas.
It's amazing how quickly they will see new successes once they
sort through their options and commit to a decision."
