out of 10 people read the headlines, but only 2 out of 10 will
read the rest.
Which
means more than every, you have only one chance to make a first
impression. That's why learning to craft a compelling headline
is a skill you will need for everything you do
articles,
brochures and especially your web page.
The
Biggest Mistake
The
biggest mistake people make on their web site copy is to talk
about themselves first. As hard as it is on our ego, people don't
care about how we do what we do, or how we learned to do what
we do. They only care about what we can do for them. What problem
will we solve? How will our product or service bring them more
money or health or happiness?
Emotion
sells
You
need to offer words that let people feel the pain or the joy or
the frustration or whatever it is you are going to provide. Use
words that draw emotion.
Elements
of a Great Headline
"If
you knew without a shadow of a doubt that you could get $10k-$25k+
in free advertising for 1-2 weeks of work submitting 85-200 articles,
would you do it?"
I
didn't write this, Christopher Knight of www.ezinearticles.com
did. It's a great headline that gets results. Look what he did.
He started with a guarantee: "If you knew without
a shadow of a doubt" so already you are comfortable with
the authenticity of the offer. Then he tells you the benefits:
"that you could get $10k-$25k+ in free advertising."
That perks you right up. It's free and worth major bucks. And
then he makes his call to action: "for 1-2 weeks of
work submitting 85-200 articles, would you do it?" He wants
people to submit articles to his director and that surly does
motivate one to do so.
Start
your Headline Swipe File
Begin
your collection of headlines. Find the ones that get your attention,
that motivate you to read more. Also look at the ones that don't.
I'm not a fan of pushy selling because I'm an educator not a sales
person. In fact, I have to watch that tendency because I can "soft
sell" so much that nothing happens!!!! Find that compromise,
the words and phrases that you are comfortable with that also
motivate and get results.

Now
I
am posting all my articles on my web site and I could get really
bummed if I started critiquing what I've already done. So for
article writing, I'm just going to start here and now to make
my headlines better. But I am going back to work on every one
of my sales pages. I know more now. I can do a better job. And
the page I'm going to really focus on is my index page because
if that doesn't work they won't even come into my site to explore.
Measure
Your Results
As
you change your headlines on your web site measure the results.
My measurement is sign ups for my e-magazines. I can track them
in Easy Web Automation. I track my statistics and also note what
changes I make and when. That way I can tell what's working and
what's not.
